MADREPATRIA
Le luci ronzio del villaggio sostano,
Come gli animali ei bambini riposano i loro occhi,
E le stelle gocciolano dalle nuvole.
Ombre emergono dai loro compagni,
E sorridono agli ammiccanti
Mormorii del ruscello,
Mentre le loro risate risuonano
Attraverso la galassia.
E tra le montagne e le valli,
Anno dopo anno,
La sera balla con l’alba.
English translation:
The humming lights of the village stop,
As the animals and children rest their eyes,
And the stars drip from the clouds.
Shadows emerge from their companions,
And smile at the winking
Murmurs of the stream,
While their laughter resonates
Through the galaxy.
And among the mountains and valleys,
Year after year,
The dusk dances with the dawn.
WHEN I HEARD THE LEARN'D ASTRONOMER
(Text by Walt Whitman)
When I heard the learn’d astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were arranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the learn’d astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.
